Both the 2016 Honda CR-V and the 2016 Ford Escape are competitive compact crossover utility vehicles that are popular with families here in the Elgin and Crystal Lake, IL area. Both should provide you with all the utility, efficiency, and safety that you want out of your next family vehicle, but they’re not exactly equals. Find out which one is going to be the better for your driving needs below!

Powertrains and Capability

While these models offer similar powertrains, the numbers are different enough that you’ll notice that difference at the pump and when you’re behind the wheel.

The 2016 Ford Escape is powered by a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that generates 168 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. The Escape earns an EPA estimate of 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway with front-wheel drive and automatic transmission.

The 2016 Honda CR-V uses a 2.4L four-cylinder to generate more power and yield better fuel economy estimates than the Escape. It’s rated at 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque, and the EPA estimates that the CR-V is capable of 26 mpg city/33 mpg highway* with front-wheel drive and continuously variable transmission.

As you can see, the CR-V is the clear winner here.

Safety

We know that families in the Chicago area prioritize safety. In safety ratings, these two vehicles once again diverge. While both earn a five-star safety rating in National Highway Traffic Safety ratings, in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ratings, the 2016 Ford Escape came away with a ‘Poor’ ranking in the Small Front Overlap crash test. The 2016 Honda CR-V earned a ‘Good’ ranking in that test, and every other IIHS category.

The Ford Escape is also missing any forward collision warning or automatic collision prevention braking system. The Honda can be had with the Honda Sensing system, which includes those features, along with lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. With the system, the Honda CR-V earns a ‘Superior’ rating from the IIHS for front crash prevention.

It seems like the Honda CR-V is once again the clear winner.
