The 2016 Honda CR-V and the 2016 Jeep Cherokee are crossover utility vehicles that appeal to families in the Elgin and Crystal Lake, IL area in search of an efficient, versatile vehicle with the latest technology. While you’ll find that these vehicles fit the bill – and they’re both perfect for tackling our Midwest winter – there are some major differences that you’ll prefer to know about before making up your mind.

Powertrains and Capability

When you’re shopping for a vehicle, you’re probably comparing EPA mileage figures and power output figures. Both are valuable pieces of information when you’re trying to get a feel for a car.

To that end, the 2016 Jeep Cherokee gets a 2.4L four-cylinder engine under the hood making 184 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque. With standard front-wheel drive and automatic transmission this powertrain rates at 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway/25 mpg combined, according to the EPA.

Meanwhile, the 2016 Honda CR-V also comes with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine, but this one provides more power at 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. With continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive the CR-V earns a considerably better estimate from the EPA at 26 mpg city/33 mpg highway/29 mpg combined*.

The added power and efficiency of the CR-V makes it the easy choice.

Safety

Safety is another concern when it comes to shopping for a new vehicle for your family. There are two different major testing bodies: the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an independent organization, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a part of the federal government.

In NHTSA testing, the 2016 Honda CR-V earned a five-star overall crash test safety rating while the 2016 Jeep Cherokee only earned a four-star overall rating. The CR-V also earned a five-star rating in the Front Driver Crash test, while the Jeep again only earned a four-star rating.

In IIHS testing, the Honda CR-V earned a ‘Good’ rating in the small overlap front crash test. Unfortunately, the Cherokee only earned a ‘Marginal’ rating in that test.
