Volkswagen Passat

Both the 2017 Volkswagen Passat and the 2017 Honda Accord are refined, upscale sedans that provide plenty of value in the midsize sedan segment. Either one of these models could be a good choice, but which one is better for your family? Take a look at how much they have to offer in the areas of power, efficiency, and safety.

Efficiency and Performance

If you want a blend of performance and efficiency, you’ll find that the Accord provides both better combined fuel economy in EPA estimates and more horsepower than the Passat. See for yourself:

  • Volkswagen Passat: Using a turbocharged 1.8L four-cylinder, the Passat makes 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. With a standard six-speed automatic transmission, the EPA says that the Passat is capable of up to 23 mpg city/34 mpg highway/27 mpg combined.
  • Honda Accord: With a 2.4L four-cylinder engine, the Accord puts out 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with a continuously variable transmission, the Accord is capable of up to 27 mpg city/36 mpg highway/30 mpg combined in EPA estimates.

It’s hard to argue with figures like that. The Accord simply delivers superior performance!

In testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these two models both achieved excellent safety scores. The Accord and Passat both received a 5-Star Overall crash test rating, making them excellent choices when it comes to safety. However, while the Passat achieved only a 4-star rating in rollover safety, the Accord did better with a 5-star rating*.
