The 2016 Honda Pilot and the 2016 Ford Flex are both three-row vehicles that fit the needs of may families here in the Chicagoland area, from Elgin to Crystal Lake, IL. Unfortunately for the Flex, the Pilot is simply a better choice thanks to its smart design, powerful and efficient powertrain, and high-tech features. Take a closer look and see for yourself below!

Seating and Cargo Capacity

The 2016 Honda Pilot offers seating for up to eight passengers, while the 2016 Ford Flex is limited to seven passengers. Sure, it’s not a huge difference, but if you need that eighth seat you’ll find it in the Pilot.

In terms of cargo capacity, it’s a close one, but the Honda Pilot comes out ahead. The Pilot has up to 83.9 cubic feet of total cargo space. The Flex maxes out at 83.2 cubic feet.

Power and Performance

The 2016 Honda Pilot comes standard with a smaller turning circle diameter than the 2016 Ford Flex, and the Pilot also gets variable assisted steering to keep it maneuverable in small spaces. The Flex does not offer that feature. Additionally, the Pilot gets Hill Start Assist to keep you from rolling back on a steep hill, a feature which the Ford is again missing. The Honda Pilot is also able to tow 5,000 pounds, while the Ford Flex is capable of pulling only 2,000 pounds.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Honda Pilot when equipped with front-wheel drive and nine-speed automatic transmission earns an EPA rating of 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined*, and the six-speed version comes away with a 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway/22 mpg combined EPA estimate. The Ford Flex earns a relatively poor 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway rating from the EPA.

Safety

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the 2016 Ford Flex earned an ‘Acceptable’ rating in the small front overlap test and a ‘Basic’ rating in the front crash prevention test. The 2016 Honda Pilot equipped with Honda Sensing earned a ‘Good’ rating in the small front overlap test and a ‘Superior’ rating in the front crash prevention test, as well as the 2016 Top Safety Pick+ ranking.
